Deep-sea Time-series Sediment Trap Solution

The marine particulate matter records many biological activities and physical and chemical information in the process of its formation, change and deposition, so it is of great significance to the study of particulate matter flux, marine sedimentology, global change and marine environmental monitoring. The sediment trap is a sampler that collects suspended particulate matter in the water environment. The trap acts as a water filter, collecting and storing various particles and elements for later analysis by researchers. This type of sampler has been widely used in the following areas: (1) to measure vertical fluxes of organic and inorganic particles between the nutrient-generating and nutrient-decomposing layers; (2) to explore the amount of phytoplankton and organism deposition with (3) to detect the sedimentation rate of phytoplankton during the blooming period; (4) to carry out the mechanistic study of benthic organisms; (5) to determine the mineralization of plankton and the sedimentation of pollen; ( 6) to control and monitoring of hazardous substances…etc.

Practice in the past 20 years has proved that the application of sediment traps plays a certain role in promoting the development of chemical oceanography and biological oceanography. The earliest sediment traps can only sample sediment particles in a single time. If the samples with temporal resolution need to be obtained, multiple injections are required, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. The time-series sediment trap is a sampling device that is submerged in the water at a certain depth and automatically and regularly collects the sedimentary particulate matter in the water according to the preset working procedures. important means.

The time-series sediment traps imported from Germany KUM by Seaward Technology are suitable for both ocean and inland waters.

The KUM Germany provides a variety of models of time-series sediment traps to adapt to different sediment flux environments, with the number of collection bottles ranging from 14, 21 to 41, and the sample bottle capacity of 400ml. Various sample changers support funnel diameters of 0.25m² or 0.5m², each with an angle of 34°. All sediment traps are fitted with a honeycomb mesh (as a funnel cover) connected by one side suspension. Suitable for water depths of 3000m, 6000m and 12000m. The maximum working time is 12 months or 24 months.

Programmable Logic Control

Control of the sample changer is performed by programmable microprocessor electronics. The residence time of a single bottle under the funnel can be set between 1 minute and 12 months (optional, 24 months).

The programming is menu-driven via the PC, and the connection to the sediment collector is achieved via the RS 232 standard interface. After programming, the sediment trap goes into sleep mode and can be disconnected from the PC.
